Carla June Young-Heflin, 71, of Merrillville, IN passed away Wednesday, August 2. Carla was born March 23, 1952, the 4th of 6 children, to Dr. James Madrid Young, Sr. and Hazel Verneida (Harris) Young in Fort Pierce, Florida. Carla accepted Christ at an early age and attended St. Paul A.M.E. in Fort Pierce, Florida. She graduated from Dan McCarty High School in 1969 and soon after relocated to Gary, IN under the care of her aunt and Uncle Ruth and Dr. James T. Hedrick, and her beloved Aunt and namesake Thelma "June" Morgan. Carla met and married Coach Ronald Heflin, Sr. in March 1975. Their union was blessed with 3 children, Kelly Renee, Ronald LeRoy, Jr., and Kristi Diane. Carla was an attentive coach's wife and found much joy mentoring the many students and players who were fortunate enough to find themselves at her dinner table. Carla spent 30 years in administrative roles for the city of Gary, working as an Administrator for Calumet Township Trustee's Office and later as an Administrative Assistant for the Gary City Court. In 2008, Carla made the decision to relocate back to Florida to help care for her grandmother, Nancy Veronica Cummings until her passing. Carla enjoyed her years in Daytona Beach, Florida working as a semi-retired Auditor at Evergreen Sales and Marketing and looked forward to her summers with grandson Caden. In 2017, Carla relocated back to Merrillville, IN under the care of her daughters. Carla was a dear mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. She is preceded in death by her loving son Ron Heflin Jr.; grandmother, Nancy V. Cummings; parents Dr. James M. and Hazel V. Young; sister Cheryl D. Redmond (Young); aunts and uncles Thelma (W.G.) Morgan, Elmer E. Harris, Mabel (Henderson) Meeks, Lillian Davis, Ruth (James) Hedrick, George Dewey (Alma) Harris. She is survived by her devoted daughters Kelly and Kristi Heflin of Merrillville, IN; grandsons Caden R.J. Heflin and Bryson K. Williams of Merrillville, IN; brothers James (Barbara) M. Young, Jr. of Bartlett, IL and Faruq Abdal-Sabur and Roger K. Young of Minneapolis, MN; sister Tammi S. Young of Gary, IN; aunts and uncles Bobbie (Robert) Taylor, Martha Ann (John) Lambert, Mary Jo Bradford, Joyce Hayes, and Ronald Harris; 21 nieces and nephews, 19 great-nieces and nephews, and a host of additional relatives and friends. Visitation, Friday, August 11, 2023, from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 pm with family hours 6-8:00 p.m. at Guy & Allen Chapel, 2959 W. 11th Avenue, Gary, IN. Funeral Services Saturday, August 12, 2023, at First A.M.E. Church, 2045 Massachusetts St, Gary, IN. Internment at Evergreen Memorial Park, Hobart, IN.
